Westchester Homes

Westchester entered the twentieth century with mostly agricultural area where they grew a variety of crops as the climate is especially friendly to farming.

The aerospace industry grew rapidly around Westchaster by what is now the airport both before and after the second World War.

Mr. Howard Hughes the movie director, aviator, and tool manufacturing company owner ran a huge plant in the lower Westchester area in what is now known as Playa Vista, Hughes Airport which is private, was part of the plant.

The Westchester properties were owned by the Hughes Tool Co., which was operated by Hughes Aircraft, which is a company that specialized in manufacturing aviation navigation equipment and communication systems.

The famous wooden transport plane dubbed the Spruce Goose was built here in Westchester.

The sixties ushered in planes that made flights over the pacific flights without the need for refueling.

Which caused a massive increase in the air traffic at Los Angeles Airport.

The home owners of Westchester blocked the expansion of the airport toward the north because the increased noise from the load jet takeoffs decreased the property values of the homes by Los Angeles airport. Los Angeles started buying homes from people that were close to the airport and were sick of the noise so many homes to the north of the airport were demolished,and eighteen hole golf course shrunk to a fifteen hole one and a local elementary school relocated at least partly because of the noise.Part of the sixties renovation the the airport included the jet age style themed building, this structure was redone to contain the Encounter Restaurant.

The Otis college of art & design, with over four thousand students moved to Westchester in the nineties. With Otis and Loyola Marymount University not far from each other, the city of Westchester has went from an aviation and defense city into a college town.

Pepperdine University is also located in Westchester.

The Ocean separates Playa del Rey from Westchester.

Centinela and Jefferson Boulevards are the northern borders, Culver City is a neighboring city as well as Ladera Heights. North Westchester has most of the homes and retail establishments along what is known as Playa del Rey and El Segundo is to the south and is close to the San Diego Freeway.
