West Los Angeles is a very affluent city. The central location makes it a focus of development and progress, with several high rise office buildings.

West LA also has a large number of Japanese owned companies.

The schools are high quality and well respected.

The University High School is one of the few old high schools in West Los Angeles that hasn't been rebuilt following earthquakes throughout the years. It still has the traditional look and feel to it with weathered brick and beautiful arched entries. Film producers love the school for a shooting location, sometimes while kids are in school they are recording.The famous campus houses an artesian style well which always has water even when it is very dry.

The Department of Veterans Affairs runs the Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy in West LA to provide prescriptions via mail order to US veterans.

The city of West Los Angeles is influenced in part by the Hispanic community (mostly from Oaxaca) in some areas which is evident by the tasty authentic Mexican restaurants, cantinas and Mexican shops.

Most of what we now know as West LA was part of the Rancho San Vincente y Santa Monica that was part of the Spanish conquest.

As the settlers from the east arrived after the Mexican-American War, the original mexican california land owners were forced sold their property or were made to move.

Many Japanese settled in West Los Angeles because they were prohibited from buying land in the boundaries of LA. The Japanese community added nurseries and orchards after they moved in, some are still around today.

The center of West LA used to be the City of Sawtelle, it was annexed by Los Angeles in the twenties.

West Los Angeles has Mar Vista to the south, Rancho Park on the East, Westwood on the north and Santa Monica to the west.
