Venice Homes

The city of Venice is an eclectic mix of artists, craftsman, surfers and more. We will work our way back in time to see how Venice came to be as we see it today.

In the late seventies and early eighties, Venice was introduced to mural art. The buildings in the city were painted with scenes of everyday life, landscapes and tributes to Venice artists like the Doors singer Jim Morrison. Artisans, musicians, vendors, palm readers, body builders, and live television coverage of the summer olympics of nineteen eighty-four, Venice began enticing visitors from everywhere.

When outdoor skating exploded in popularity with the polyurethane skate wheel, the city's wide ocean side Walk and bike path was a favorite location for skating. Venice vendors rented skates to tourists that flocked to the area eager to try the new sport. Street performers and boardwalk artists entertained the crowds. The Los Angeles mayor coined Venice the roller skating capital of the world, the city of Venice had once again become a major tourist attraction.

In the beginning of the sixties Venice needed redevelopment badly. The city started code enforcement that meant all the buildings had to be retrofitted to meet the new standards. It was nearly impossible for homeowners to get a loan. Over five hundred home and buildings on the ocean front and also in the historic windward business district were completely demolished. The only thing that stopped most of Venice being bulldozed was a lawsuit that halted the unfair practices.

In the sixties life in Venice was centered around art, poetry and music. Venice was tolerant of the bohemian people that gathered in the local coffee houses. Flower children migrated to Venice to be part of the free expression.

World War 2 affected Venice and the seaside amusement parks. A nighttime blackout was ordered which permitted only the piers and their attractions to only stay open during the day.

The national guard patrolled offshore searching for enemy subs and warships.

Venice became a hotspot for soldiers and sailors on weekend leave. The curfew was done away with in nineteen forty-four.

Oil was discovered on the Venice Peninsula in nineteen thirty. In less that a year almost one hundred and fifty wells produced 40,000 barrels every day. The ecological harm that was done at the time was a concern for Los Angeles.

The Depression caused great strife in nineteen thirty two. A few bank in Venice went bankrupt and the Venice Pier was in danger of being lost at that time. When prohibition was repealed and bingo was revolutionized the economy bounced back.

When Venice was annexed into Los Angeles, the miniature railroad was removed and most of the canals were filled to make way for cars. You can still see canals south of venice boulevard as they were back in the day. The tobacco baron that funded a lot of the development died in nineteen twenty of lung cancer, leaving the pier to his son.

Four weeks later the amusement pier that was his dream burned to the ground. A new roller coaster and bandstand tower were the only things left after the fire. A few months later the pier was back up and running. In nineteen twenty-four the pier was burnt completely along with nearby licks pier. They were both rebuilt and opened again in nineteen twenty-six.

The Venice Aquarium opened on the pier in 1909. There were some of the finest sea creatures on display and later was the marine biological station for the University of Southern California.

Venice had a scenic railroad aside the Abbot Kinney Pier where patrons went by mountainous terrain and through a large scenic tunnel.

Venice and Fun were synonymous. Skating soon took over and a rink was built on Trolley Way which is now Pacific Avenue
A roller hockey team which challenged teams from other Southern California areas.

As the network of canals were nearing completion and the nearby residential lots were sold, Venice grew rapidly.

Ocean water began flowing into the canal's central lagoon, with that the majority of the canals were filled. A man’s vision of a renaissance and amusement park themed city transformed a deteriorating
marshland west of Los Angeles.

Venice history is still being written. Today Venice is keeping with its colorful tradition as being the number one seaside destination on the West Coast. Visit Venice and be a part of history.
