Some History on Marina Del Rey: the city of Marina del Rey was a large project. In nineteen fifty-seven the jetties for the entrance channel were built,
they weren't exactly breaking new ground as over 70 years ago there
was a bustling seaport in Marina Del Rey.
Under the watchful eye of the Santa Fe Railroad a man named M.C. Wicks,
organized the Port Ballona Development Company. Wicks had aspired to
develop the Playa del Rey inlet and estuary into a large commercial
harbor to serve Los Angeles. The project went belly up after Wicks declared
bankruptcy, the area was a favorite spot for duck hunters for of 25
years in nineteen sixteen, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed
to Congress the Playa del Rey Inlet and Basin as a major harbor was
not a practical solution. However in nineteen thiry six, congress reconsidered
the reports and the County Board of Supervisors ordered another study
the next year. The decision ultimately was to locate the port in San
Pedro, after that developers designed a harbor for small boats. In nineteen
forty-nine the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sent a design proposal to
Congress on a harbor specifically for a pleasure craft harbor capable
of handling about eight thousand boats for about twenty-three million.
Marina del Rey got past it's major development problems and progressed
steadily. The official dedication of Marina del Rey Harbor was in nineteen
sixty-five.

Now Marina Del Rey has six thousand boat slips and in the various marinas
and dry storage hundreds more also call Marina del Rey home. The capacity
of thirty five clubs and restaurants has the nations highest concentration
of restaurants except for New York City. Boat launching ramps and facilities
attracts thousands of trailer class boats throughout Southern California.
There have also been some nice public facilities made more recently
like Burton W. Chance Park, Admiralty Park, the Community Building,
a few view piers and the promenade overlooking the main channel, also
about two thousand feet of transient/gust boat docks and one hundred-eighty
feet of public fishing docks were also added. In nineteen eighty-two
the building was finished for the Marina del Rey visitor information
center.

The revenue for the counties projects are now running at about twenty
million each year. Life is like a pleasure cruise in Marina Del Rey.
