In 1905 the amusement park Venice of America opened up with high hopes of being the west side coney island.

Mar Vista was then known as Ocean Park Heights.

Mar Vista was re-named in nineteen twenty four and was still considered to be the rural area of Ocean Park even though the city was incorporated soon after they changed the name.

Water was a primary concern in southern california in those days.

Los Angeles was importing water from Owens Valley since nineteen thirteen, the problem was that the water was only for the citizens of Los Angeles.

Mar Vista voted to be annexed in nineteen twenty six, the residents passed the measure two to one.

In nineteen twenty-seven Mar Vista was formally annexed, which was originally a little under five square miles.

Mar Vista is a racially and an economically diverse area of small ranches and bungalows, while the homes in the hills by the border of Santa Monica are more luxurious.

Mar Vista had an electric railway streetcars that ran along Culver and Venice Boulevards during the city's early years.

Mar Vista population is more spread out than neighboring Palms, because the homeowner associations fought a nineteen fifties zoning change that transformed a lot of Palms and West Los Angeles from sprawling suburban areas to urban neighborhoods that were filled with renters. There is still plenty of apartment homes on Venice and Barrington.

Recently there has been a rise in newly constructed Mediterranean revival mansions and Persian inspire palaces on the hills of Mar Vista.
